General information on AdChoices and Online Behavioural Advertising

AdChoices is a self-regulatory programme that requires participating companies to include an AdChoices icon in any ads that use interest-based advertising. It's intended to provide consumers with greater transparency around interest-based advertising and to give them the ability to opt-out of this type of targeting. You can learn more at www.youradchoices.ca.

Online Behavioural Advertising typically uses information such as your IP address, the pages visited on a website or across several sites, the length of time you spend on a page, the advertisements you viewed, articles your read, purchases, search terms or user preferences such as language or web browser. Online Behavioural Advertising does not use things like SIN, credit information or names. The Globe does not sell your personal information to third parties for their own use.

The AdChoices icon is currently located in the footer of globeandmail.com. On globeadvisor.com and globeandmail.com you will see the icon in any ads that use Online Behavioural Advertising. We will be adding the icon to the footer of globeadvisor.com in the near future.

Advertising companies uses cookies to track your online behaviour, so you must opt out from Online Behavioural Advertising on every device in every browser.

Behavioural advertising is legal, and interest-based advertising has existed everywhere on the Internet, including other news media sites, Facebook, Google, and more, for many years. It is only in recent years that there have been growing concerns around this practice and calls from the public and privacy regulators to limit the use of personal behavioural information for ad targeting.

Please visit www.youradchoices.ca. There you will find more information about Online Behavioural Advertising and AdChoices, an extensive FAQ, information about opting out, and more.
