App 5.0: Access subscriber-only content

Q. Is there a paywall built into the new app as there is on globeandmail.com?

Yes. The Globe and Mail website (Mobile and desktop), and all apps do have a metered paywall.  If you are already a digital subscriber to The Globe, please login to your account from the app for unlimited access to articles.  If you are not a digital subscriber and would like to be, you can subscribe at globeandmail.com or within the app from the settings menu.

You can still use the app if you are not a paid subscriber; however the number and type of articles you can read will be limited.

Q. Am I allowed to read a certain number of articles before I have to subscribe?

There is a metered paywall on The Globe and Mail website and on the apps.  Some content is available to subscribers only.  Other content is metered so a user can only consume a finite number of articles.

Q. How do I know what type of content is ‘subscriber-only’ on the new app?

Subscriber-only content is identified with a key icon.

Q. Is there a cost to download the Globe News app?

The Globe News app is free to download.

Q. I’m a digital subscriber to The Globe and Mail, is access to the new app included as part of my subscription?

Yes.  Go to the settings menu via the wheel in the top right corner.  Click on “Sign in or Create an Account” from the settings menu.  You can then log in to the app using your existing globeandmail.com credentials or register to create a new account.

Q. I used to be able to browse Globe and Mail iOS apps for free but now I am seeing a message saying that I need to subscribe in order to access content. Is this an error?

No, it’s not an error. You must be a Globe and Mail digital subscriber to access all of our content in our apps or on our website.  Some articles in the app are only available to subscribers, while others have a limit on how many you can read for free.  If you are not logged in, but are a subscriber, you will be prompted to log in.  If you are not a subscriber, you will be prompted to purchase a digital subscription to The Globe and Mail once you reach this limit.

Q. If I become a Globe and Mail digital subscriber, can I access the same content on my phone, tablet, and desktop computer?

Yes.  If you purchase a subscription via the app, then you will automatically get full access to The Globe and Mail on the app.

*Please note for your subscription to be active in the app, you need to be logged in to the same iTunes account you used to subscribe on your device.

To extend this access to our website, you will need to link the paid subscription account in the app with a globeandmail.com account. You will be prompted to link your accounts after payment in the app.  See below for details:

  1. After you subscribe, a thank you screen will appear asking you to login or register to link your in-app subscription purchase to a globeandmail.com account.
  2. Registration Screen – fill out this screen in order to create a new globeandmail.com account that can be used to login on the app, on desktop or mobile web.
  3. Login Screen – enter existing globeandmail.com credentials in order to get full digital access from desktop and mobile web as well as on the app.  (Linking happens in the backend)
  4. For newly registered users, a verification link will be sent to your email
  5. Click the link to verify your email address.  You will then need to go back to the app and login in to your new account.  This will finalize the account linking process.

Note 1: You must use the app to complete the account linking process.

Note 2: If a user doesn’t link accounts as soon as they complete a subscription purchase, they simply need to go to the settings screen (click on the wheel icon in the upper right corner) and click on “Sign in or Create an Account” and either sign in or register.  Linking will happen automatically.

Note 3: If you purchase your digital subscription to The Globe and Mail via The Globe’s website, then all you need to do is login to the app with your globeandmail.com username and password for full access. There is no need link accounts.

Q. If I change my email address at The Globe and Mail and have an app subscription or access, how will this email change be reflected in the app?

A. If you are not a subscriber, the app will not automatically refresh your profile.  So the only way the email change would be updated is if you log out and then log back in.

If you are a subscriber, the app will periodically update your customer profile.  Whenever the profile is changed, the app will update it’s local info to reflect the proper information.

Q. Can I sign in to the app using my social media accounts?
